Our Approach

Our current food system is at an inflection point, faced with structural challenges and opportunities for change

We invest in mid-market companies across the food value chain in North America, working closely with entrepreneurs and operators in building a more resilient and sustainable food system.

Our strategy reflects key structural realities within the industry:

Natural Resources

The current food production model requires a 50-70% expansion to meet 2050 demand, while agriculture currently uses 50% of the world’s habitable land and 70% of its freshwater withdrawals.

Food Waste

Each year, 1.6 billion tons of food, or 30% of our global food production, is lost or wasted. In North America, food is the single largest municipal waste source.

Consumer Values

Consumer preferences are rapidly evolving and strongly influenced by sustainability. There is a growing gap between the importance of sustainability to consumers, and the current set of product / service offerings. This gap represents a meaningful risk to existing brands, reputation and revenues.

Climate Change

Food production is responsible for 25% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, across agriculture production, food processing, and distribution. Furthermore, the impact of climate change will lead to greater volatility in crop yields.

Although these macro challenges represent meaningful structural risks to our food system, we also believe they present a significant long-term opportunity for progress and value creation.
